It was a full slate with 20 mixed doubles teams from across
the province, including some of the top ranked players in North America.
There were no big upsets on the way to the finals but some
great matches were witnessed. The Convener's is such a unique tournament as
there is only one open draw but we get many B level teams supporting this
event. They truly enjoy the opportunity to play against such top level teams
that they would never normally meet in any tournament. After that the B level
teams compete in a very competitive consolation round which takes 6 matches to
win it all!
We also advance all quarter final round losers into a
Classic Plate event so everyone gets lots of squash. At only $80 per racquet
which includes a very substantial goody bag and beautiful top, lots of cold
beer and great food and the traditional Granite breakfast for the Sunday
finals, it is the best value tournament of the season!
In the consolation final, first time players from the
Ontario Racquet Club, Carol Stewart and Peter Naughton won 3-0 over Mayfair
members, Helen Kay and Dave Sciuk.
The Classic Plate saw Julie and Mike Tanner win 3-0 over
Ailsa Agnew (16 year old junior from the Granite) and Mark Langford from
Mayfair.
3rd place went to Michele Ramsey and Scott Dormer as Rebecca
Hazel (who filled in for a last minute withdrawal from Marci Sier) was
committed already to another tournament on the Sunday morning and could not
play the 3/4 match. She played with Dave Letourneau and were a very exciting
young team to watch.
The main final had something for everyone. Incredible
shotmaking, amazing athleticism and competitive determination. In the end,
Jessica DiMaura and Scott Dulmage of the Granite were too strong for Stephanie
and James Hewitt of the Cricket Club taking the match 3 games to 1.
Tons of fun was had by all. You grin, you win!
